Grade 8     Feb. 13/2012 

Math -   Fractions with order of operations and the final quiz are now complete.  The students will be working on their portfolio entries and their reflections on their mental math skills.  Parents will be working through parts of the mental math with the kids, when the portfolios go home (Feb. 28).

Squares and square roots, estimation and Pythagorus are the next topics to include in the world of math.  Math contests will be written on the 28th of the month, and the kids have had the opportunity to practise in class with contests from the past years...many to choose from.

Science      We will be working with the fluids unit, which includes several short inquiry pieces...experiments.  The kids have the opportunity to do other experiments at home as well, so if the parents want to watch them in action...Here's the chance!   Last week, the students wrote a "practice science exam".  There was no study needed for it, but the intent was to expose them to the format of an exam.  I feel that the experience will help to prepare them for the April LA and Math exams.   This may be the first exam that many of them have written, but it definitely will not be the last one that they will see!!

 Art  

Facial features...eyes, noses, mouths and ears are the subjects of study at the present time.  Drawing faces and shading details will be the focus of the next few classes.  Smile!  Portfolio selections will be included from art as well.
