Ukrainian Christmas 2012
Ukrainian Language Program
The grade 6, 7, and 8 Ukrainian classroom has had many wonderful times this year. We started the Christmas Season off by making non-edible dough ornaments for the Christmas tree in our classroom and beeswax candles as gifts for our family or friends. We went to Oakbank Elementary School and performed in front of the younger students and had a visit from St. Nicholas who gave us gifts. We went caroling to the Sunova Credit Union, the local Co-op, and the Sunrise Transportation office. We put smiles on peoples’ faces everywhere we went! The end of our Christmas celebration came with the presentation of the traditional Ukrainian Christmas Eve Dinner. Everyone brought in food to share. One of the girls in the grade eight classroom told us that our meal would begin when she saw the first star in the sky. The prayers and well-wishing poems were shared by the other grade eight girls. This year we had the five grade eight boys be the masters of the household who throw the kutia, a mixture of wheat, poppyseed, and honey, up to the ceiling. If it stuck, then the farmers’ harvest would be plentiful. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered and those who made the delicious food. What a great way to celebrate the Christmas season!
